Lia Barrett
Lia Barrett is a graduate of Parsons School of Design and Eugene Lang College in New York where she earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography and a Bachelors of Arts in Social and Historical Inquiry. At fifteen months old, she was adopted from Korea to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. During her senior year at Parsons, she decided to focus on international adoption, as she was becoming increasingly concerned about the general attitudes and politics surrounding adoption practices. She has been to Korea twice within the past year to photograph in orphanages, rehabilitation centers, and homes for unwed mothers. To accompany pre-adoption depictions, she is also photographing adoptees from all over the world. Her goal is to bring the differing aspects of adoption into the same discussion, so that adoptees that are at the forefront of many anti-adoption movements may see themselves reflected in those whose futures are still unknown.
During her most recent visit to Korea, Barrett decided to start an ongoing project of photographing birthmothers with their children. She leaves the images on record with the adoption agency so that adoptees and birthmothers may retrieve the priceless records at a later time.
Barrett lived in Roatan, Honduras for the last year where she focused on underwater photography, including a project in a submarine where she was photographing deep-sea animals at depths down to over 2,500 ft.. She will be traveling through Korea and South East Asia for the remainder of the year photographing underwater and above. Her next show is in Seoul in August.
